Celebrating Darnall: Three Murals by Neck of the Wood Studio and Collaborators
Public art has the power to transform spaces, spark conversation, and reflect the spirit of a community. In Darnall, Sheffield, a trio of new murals are doing just that – each one a visual love letter to local history, culture, and connection. Spearheaded by Neck of the Wood Studio, with support from a range of talented collaborators, the murals bring colour and storytelling to everyday streetscapes.
Site 1: AF Dobson
Collaborators: Neck of the Wood Studio & Enso
This vibrant mural acts as a joyful welcome to the area, paying tribute to the rich tapestry of Darnall’s local businesses. Symbols woven into the design tell their own stories: tomatoes and olives represent greengrocers (and olives, also, a nod to peace); a steaming cup of tea salutes the area’s cafes and restaurants; a magical goat on a flying carpet recalls Balfour’s Carpets; and a TV set and vintage film reel honour AF Dobson and the legacy of Darnall’s seven former cinemas. It’s a layered celebration of place, memory, and trade—both past and present.

Site 2: Aries Lighting
Collaborators: Neck of the Wood Studio & Ben PMA Signs
For this site, the team leaned into a more abstract visual style. Drawing from archival images of business signage from across Darnall, the mural is composed of torn and collaged typography, mimicking the look of weathered billboards layered with history. If you look closely – or squint just right – you’ll see the words “We Live Here” emerge from the design. It’s a quiet yet powerful statement about presence, identity, and belonging.

Site 3: Darnall Library
Collaborators: Neck of the Wood Studio & Faunagraphic
The third mural takes a softer, more whimsical turn. Set in a lush garden scene, the artwork pays homage to the beloved cats of Darnall – creatures found across the globe and cherished in every community. But more than a tribute to feline friends, this mural speaks to the restorative power of gardening, the importance of green spaces, and the role of nature in nurturing mental wellbeing and community spirit. It’s a gentle call to care – for the environment, for each other, and for ourselves.

Green Spaces
