Maintaining and enhancing her IT skills through volunteering
KM initially started her journey towards volunteering with Darnall Well Being thanks to information that our team member, Sofia, gave to her when she came along to our Friday afternoon craft group. The reason KM originally wanted to volunteer was to ensure that she maintained her IT skills, as she was unemployed and looking for work at that time – so she asked if she would be able to have a volunteering opportunity involving admin work.
KM has welcomed the opportunity, saying that the team and Volunteer Coordinator have made her feel very welcome and valued.
Although my input is small, I am enjoying learning the Airtable database, and making some contribution how ever small – data inputting, photocopying or just helping out. The result is positive for me, as being unemployed and now retired, it gives an opportunity to meet new people, keep up with technology, learn about different cultures, and give something back to the diverse community.
KM
KM feels that volunteering with us provides people with a safe space where they can try something new, choose their hours around existing commitments, and where training is provided and encouraged. Our volunteers are also given opportunities to expand skills, knowledge and experience, which can provide a good foundation for future employment opportunities and enables them to gain confidence in their own skills.
Training workshops are excellent and get togethers for volunteers are welcomed. I would certainly recommend volunteering with Darnall Well Being and if you are interested, please contact Yasmin.
KM
Fran, our Communications & Contracts Manager, has worked with KM to support her in inputting to Airtable, and recognises her contribution:
KM has really helped us by adding data from our registers to our new database. Thanks to her support, we now have a whole year’s worth of attendance data in one place, which makes analysing our figures and reporting to funders all so much easier. KM comes regularly to the office and it’s great to have her there – she really feels like one of the team.
